Invokation: true players

Who are the players of this game?

Judgment:

The following is the current complete list of players:
1
AAA Aaron A. Aaronson
backseatpilot
Chuck
ctmf
flatluigi
gerryblog
jay
jeblis
mosessis
shelleycat
ssg
tallus
vernondalhart
volkspider

No additional players may join unless they can prove that they are a MeFi member, or can convince a majority of current players that they are a person not already playing under a different MeFiNo user ID.

Well crafted, ctmf.

#

That makes sense. The convicing a majority of players removes the absolute requirement for all new players to out themselves (and allows us to argue about how to show that we are convinced) and in general proving you're a mefi player is pretty easy.

#

Great. I preemptively vote against overruling.

#

It does the job for this turn, but we need a real rule to deal with this. Any new player can still join next turn (rule 116 allows anything that is not prohibited by the rules and this judgement is not a rule) forcing judgement again.

#

This wording has a loophole, too.

It boils down to: Each player may have one free sock puppet. Each additional sock puppet costs $5, payable to mathowie.

Initially, I can convince everyone I'm a unique player (which I am).
For the first sock, I show my real MeFi username.
For each additional sock, I just register a new MeFi username. And I only have to do that if I can't BS my way in first.

Foolproof language is hard to come up with, and usually long, complex, and hard to read. This should work to mildly discourage socks for the time being, though.

#

What if we just froze the player list so no new players may join, then added a provision that lets anyone who used to be on the list be re-added with the exception of the two obvious socks? Does anyone feel strongly about letting new folks in? Our last (legit) new person was vernondalhart and he/she's been here for almost six weeks.

#

You know, you're right. It'd be much easier to assume nobody's going to join up (as it seems to be).

I'm going to bed now, so if anyone wants to help with the wording of 309 with that in mind, it'd be great.

#

Oops, I overlapped you (from the other thread). I'm glad you agree! I'll try to come up with tentative wording in a bit.

#

Why is offby1 not included on this list?

#

Sorry, I just saw the revision history for the list of players page where offby1 apparently removed himself from the list. Carry on.

#

I think this sets a very dangerous precedent. We have a case here of a player creating invocations which he himself is judging, and in so doing creating completely new rules from the bench.

I think we may find ourselves in a situation of never being able to move past 309, with an invocation fillibuster.

#

Why have I not been included on this list, ctmf? I am Meatbomb on MetaFilter, just check my user profile there.

#

AAA: The judge can't create rules.

I do think judicial reform is needed, but there isn't any reason to suggest that this judgement creates any sort of rule and of course whatever is not prohibited by the rules is allowed.

#

@Abron: no worries, buddy. I think you haven't read the judgment carefully. As you have proven you are a MeFi member, you are in. I'll edit the player list now.

#

All I see on Meatbomb's user profile is an assertion that he is AAA Abron B Abronson. ctmf's judgment requires that new players must prove they are MeFi members (or convince a majority of current players etc.) A mere assertion is not proof.

#

Well, I can't see Meatbomb editing his profile like that unless he was indeed this Abron character. What exactly would count as proof for you?

#

I could see Meatbomb possibly editing his profile like that if he was bribed, cajoled, or otherwised coerced by Abron B Abronson to do so. Indeed, if a non-MeFite wanted to join the game, what better way would there be, given ctmf's judgment, than to convince a MeFite to collude with him to make it appear as if he were that MeFite?

But in any case, I'm not the one you have to prove it to. What would constitute proof to me is irrelevant, at least until I'm the Judge agin. You should be asking ctmf what would be proof to him.

#

"agin?" Must be that brain damage due to glue-sniffing. I meant "again," of course.

#

But in any case, I'm not the one you have to prove it to.

I don't have to prove anything, Chuck, as I am on the Golden List that has now been imposed by the judge. It's Abron needs to do the proving. All I am saying is, he seems to legitimately be that Meatbomb degenerate.

#

Ah, you're right, of course. It is Abron who must prove to ctmf that he is Meatbomb (or at least, a MeFite). Silly me. Can't imagine how I could have conflated the two of you.

#

I can, Chuck! The bastard has basically hijacked my handle, just substituting the second "a" for a "b". I mean, if someone joined as "chuck", it wouldn't be hard to understand people confusing you with him, eh?
