I think aside from shelleycat, there were others whose participation was pretty tenuous at the end. Perhaps some were glad to see it over and happy to be able to leave - if there was really such anger and disgust at our unjust victory I think you'd have seen more votes and comments to that effect, ssg.
mostly people seem instead to have gotten disproportionately mad or else just gone away.
Most of the players did indeed just go away. I'd like to avoid that in future games. I think we can learn some lessons from what happened here to help us not have that occur.
Do we want to start next round without solving some of the meta-problems beforehand?
We should discuss more, yes! I think we need a more official "here we go" sort of startup, jay. Let's get a new player list and a new thread to hash these things out. I was hoping for some sort of clean slate... for some of us this is round 2, but it is also a new game and we have first timers joining in... Can this other stuff be archived, or can we move to a new branch of the site, or whatever?
To answer shelleycat's question, I can reset the account password and email address, but deleting the account would give all the posts to Anonymous.
But honestly, this sort of clash is so common there's a name for it, Left In A Huff. "It has become traditional in Agora Nomic for long-standing players to suddenly decide that several other players hold grudges against em, and to deregister with a lengthy rant about how Agora is never going to succeed with that kind of attitude."
But the link also points out, "Most of these players have also rejoined the game some time after Leaving in a Huff."
We kicked a lot of dirt at the umpire, and he probably deserved it. But after cooling off a few days, the ump and the players generally gear up for the next game, because what else are you gonna do?
So I'd prefer to leave all accounts open, in hopes that you'll unidle soon to stick it to your foes when the opportunities arise.
I think I may sit out the next round, at least for a while. It's been a lot of fun, but I'm still smarting a bit from the way the first game ended, and I think things might go better without me in the second. Best of luck with it.
There are a few new folks queued up here to start, so dragging this first game forward doesn't seem like the best way to sunshine and light.
a little more legal engineering and a little less social engineering
I'd hate for the next game to have the same downer of a conclusion
Want to add that I definitely agree with all of these points, though I think we could have an Interesting Discussion about whose side is (generally) legal engineering and whose side is (generally) social engineering in this particular case. I think your style of play is great, ssg, even if we've butted head a few times on legalistic and nitpicky points.
Even gerryblog seems to want the game to continue, though I think he is afraid that his pals won't think he is cool anymore if he says it any less obliquely.
Would this game really be better if judges change their interpretation of the rules because other players threw tantrums? Is that what you mean in the other thread by "a little more legal engineering and a little less social engineering"? It seems to me that in the Unfortunate Episode of the SCVF the social engineering has largely flowed from your camp, though, again to your credit, not from you. The points transfer thing *was* legal engineering.
There's a very simple, legal way to undo this mess, and it's getting three more players to vote to overrule. If that can't be done, then the SCVF win stands, whether or not that's the optimum outcome. Personally, I think the optimum outcome would have been for an energized and outraged populace to have thrown legal challenges at the SCVF until one stuck, but that didn't happen, mostly people seem instead to have gotten disproportionately mad or else just gone away.
The victory condition (300) can be satisfied by 300 or any number greater. That doesn't not mean that the victory condition IS 300 or any number greater. Didn't you read my STARCRAFT analogy?
Anyway, this is (clearly) (OBVIOUSLY) a point on which reasonable people can differ, which is why we have a judge, which makes all this nonsense all the more nonsensical. I can so picture you on the Supreme Court demanding endless revotes because OBVIOUSLY there's no penumbra to be found in the Constitution!!! etc
There are a few new folks queued up here to start, so dragging this first game forward doesn't seem like the best way to sunshine and light.
I very much agree. I'm pretty stubborn though and I'd really like to see this mess cleared up before we move on to a new game. I'd much rather the next game be played with a little more legal engineering and a little less social engineering (no insult to the SCVF intended; I just don't really want to play the game the way that you play). I'm concerned that if we accept this victory now, there won't be much hope that people won't try the same kind of moves in the next game. Maybe I'm taking this too seriously, but I'd hate for the next game to have the same downer of a conclusion. I realize that my style of play is probably quite a bit too legalistic and nitpicky for many players and I'll do my best to tone that down if the next game gets of the ground.
I'd be happy to Mulligan this game, if the other players are so inclined. gerryblog?
shelleycat, future games will be worse off without you. I'm sorry to see you go.
This seems to be editorializing rather than a statement of fact?
No, that's the application of logic. If the victory condition is having any number of points greater than 299, then 458 is exactly zero points from the victory condition, and the transfer was illegal. As a matter of fact, logic is the basis of my vote here, not partisan self-interest. I believe partisanship in this game has been handled quite ably by your crew, AAA.
shelleycat: why not vote to overrule? Even gerryblog seems to want the game to continue, though I think he is afraid that his pals won't think he is cool anymore if he says it any less obliquely.
I wish you'd get your votes in order to overrule me so we could just be done with it
gerryblog, that is how we continue. To stop, we have to win.
But this really is getting silly, and I don't think stopping our victory is going to make anything better. There are a few new folks queued up here to start, so dragging this first game forward doesn't seem like the best way to sunshine and light.
If the victory condition is having any number of points greater than 300, then the transfer of points that left gerryblog with 458 points was illegal and gerryblog has not won.
This seems to be editorializing rather than a statement of fact? I agree that his judgment was unorthodox, but I am voting to uphold the win regardless. I've explained my opinion on the status of our victory elsewhere, and at length.
and I practically begged jay yesterday to post this poll
Indeed. It seems a little odd, gerryblog. If people vote here based on partisan self-interest, we will indeed be back to a state of play, in a game that apparently is impossible to win - not with 458 points, not with 300 points. WTF? Please stop hurting MeFiNo, gerryblog.
There are three people in the SCVF.
We have 11 players, 10 of whom are eligible to vote in the poll.
I have ruled that you only need a majority to overrule the judge.
I don't know what else I can say. This is a game, and the absolute humorlessness of the last few days has come as a complete shock to me. I thought the following would happen, either (a) someone would figure out how to beat the SCVF and keep the game going, which to his credit ssg essentially did, or (b) the SCVF would be congratulated for a clever exploit well within the spirit of Nomic and we'd start over.
Those would have been my reactions had I been on the other side of this. That's what I thought we all got into this for.
I never expected a Complete and Total Freakout on the part of certain other players. I find it utterly shocking that people have become so upset over something so utterly inconsequential, and I deeply regret pulling the trigger on the SCVF now that I see it essentially ruined the game.
If I had it to do over again, I'd have played this very differently, but I foolishly thought this sort of thing was the game. Reversing myself now won't make up for it, as I think we've lost a lot of players and enthusiasm over this, though it may have only accelerated the collapse of a game that was pretty clearly in decline already.
I'm very sorry about it, honestly. I hope the second game gets off the ground and that whatever vibe is necessary for a game to "gel" isn't trashed by conflicting expectations among players. I thought this little victory gambit would be fun, not just for the three "winners" but the group as a whole; instead, it's been utterly agonizing, and I wish you'd get your votes in order to overrule me so we could just be done with it.
ok, someone email me when this thing gets started...
But seriously, what are we waiting on to get the new game started?
Can you hear that?
Oh - shit.
I'm coming up, so you better get this party started.
So what is it going to take to get this party started?
i'm in for round two!
I think aside from shelleycat, there were others whose participation was pretty tenuous at the end. Perhaps some were glad to see it over and happy to be able to leave - if there was really such anger and disgust at our unjust victory I think you'd have seen more votes and comments to that effect, ssg.
Don't win?
Yes, only mefi members.
I think before we start we should determine who can be a player. Anyone? Just MeFi members?
Indeed, it is over.
mostly people seem instead to have gotten disproportionately mad or else just gone away.
Most of the players did indeed just go away. I'd like to avoid that in future games. I think we can learn some lessons from what happened here to help us not have that occur.
And we haven't heard from everyone. I think the newcomers are sort of waiting for this game to officially wrap, so they can be properly invited in...
Do we want to start next round without solving some of the meta-problems beforehand?
We should discuss more, yes! I think we need a more official "here we go" sort of startup, jay. Let's get a new player list and a new thread to hash these things out. Don't go - see my upcoming post in shelleycat's thread.

This poll has now been open for two days, and the vote is 3-2 against overruling. For better or for worse, I think that's that.
I intend to keep the whole history as a permanent archive. The player list should be reset to include only those who have opted in on this thread.
Do we want to start next round without solving some of the meta-problems beforehand?

A condition commonly referred to as "being a sore loser."

(there is so a penumbra)
I find it's best not to try and moderate one's own posts. Just make your post, sit back, and see where the conversation goes.

shelleycat, you know you can vote to overrule, don't you? It's that button at the top of this thread.
