What is mIRC
If you've already read the IRC Primer you'll have an idea of what IRC is. mIRC is the most downloaded and popular Windows based IRC client. Put simply, mIRC allows you to talk on IRC with your friends.
Why do I want (m)IRC?
When you first got internet access you checked out a few websites. Played a few flash games. Perhaps signed up to hotmail...
Then you began to wonder, "where is everyone?"
Well IRC is where everyone is. Blogshares is lucky to have one of the strongest, friendliest and most helpful IRC user bases I've ever seen. It's a valuable tool for your game play. mIRC makes IRC far easier than most other IRC clients. If you're on a Windows machine it's the ONLY* choice!
Yes you can use the in game messaging system. But that's like comparing email to IM. IRC(+mIRC) is much quicker. You can have your mIRC open alongside your game browser windows. This allows you to relay information to those you are chatting with/getting help from in real time.
Or you can simply hang out and chat with others when you're done playing for the night. It's especially good for non-premium players who have used up their daily quota!
Most corporations have their own IRC channels as well for those vital team talks (or if you are part of a more aggressive corp, those team strategies or days targets.)
Ever hyped once too much and wished you had someone else's spare arte to use? Just need some advice? Does your partner think you are taking up BlogSharing for a career? Well get on IRC, make friends, use them as required! Everyone gets along on IRC. It might be cut-throat in the game but it's really very friendly in IRC*.
Getting mIRC
mIRC's official download page is located here. Older versions can be found here. mIRC is not freeware although there are no functions denied from trial users. Older versions(pre-v6.3) do not stop working even after the trial period has ended but you do need to click an annoying* reminder box.
Once you've downloaded your version you can install it by running the .exe file.
Connecting to #blogshares using mIRC
Once your mIRC is installed and open you can connect to the #blogshares channel by typing(or copying) the following line
/server -f irc.geekshed.net -i yournickname {youralternatenickname} {emailaddress(can be fake)} {Your BS ID number} -j #blogshares
example :
/server -f irc.geekshed.net -i billythekid billy-the-kid email@address.com 55024 -j #blogshares
