Spork Nomic Ruleset

admin Sun, 03/30/2008 - 12:18

Herein lies the current ruleset for Spork Nomic:

Spork ½

Whatever is not prohibited or regulated by either the rules or a communal sense of fair play is permitted and unregulated.

Spork 1: A player is a Homo Sapien voluntarily participating in MeFiNo Spork, and may vote on Proposals submitted after that player's account creation date.

If at least half the players that have connected to Spork within 14 days vote within 48 hours of a Proposal's posting, and more players vote or revote Yes than vote No before such expiration, then the Proposal shall be considered approved and its text shall be executed.

New Spork Rules created by Proposals shall receive the next available Spork Number upon passage.

Proposals may not be self-ratifying; that is, they must pass under existing Spork Rules, not the rules that would be in place after the Proposal were implemented.

Spork 2: The player declared by the rules to wear the Golden Crown shall be The First Winner.

Spork 3: A rule proposal may not be amended once proposed. You can vote, suggest how others should vote, and say why you voted the way you did, but you can't suggest changes before voting. Propose a change when your turn comes. This is Spork, not jibber-jabber time.

Spork 4: Judgments

If players disagree about the legality of a move or the interpretation or application of a rule, then a simple majority of the current active players shall decide the question. A poll shall be held for 48 hours, upon which time the poll shall be closed and the will of the majority put into effect.

A Judgment poll may be closed early if YES or NO already has a majority of votes.

Disagreement for the purposes of this rule may be created by the insistence of any player. This process is called invoking judgment.

The player invoking judgment shall write the text of the poll. Voting options must include only YES, NO, and ABSTAIN options, or the judgment shall be considered void.

A player may vote on their own invocation.

When judgment has been invoked, no other proposals may be proposed or put into effect until the judgement is made or the invocation is withdrawn.

Judgments have the same force as Sporks and will be recorded in a new official document, Judgments. Any player may write a commentary regarding any judgment regardless of whether they voted for or against it. Judgments may be freely overturned by either Spork or new Judgment.

In the event of a tie, NO will be presumed to have prevailed. Judgments that do not pass have no effects.

Spork 5: The rules may only be changed in ways described by the rules.

Spork 6: Establishment of Royal Jewelry:

There are 7 types of Royal Jewelry, lowest importance to highest importance:

Hemp Necklace
Pink Pearl Bauble
Azure Earring
Silver Braces
Emerald Sunglasses
Diamond Scrunchy
Golden Crown (as established by Spork 2)

All existing players (at moment this proposal passes) shall be assigned the rank of Hemp Necklace. Any new players will automatically be assigned Hemp Necklaces.

A player may only wear 1 piece of Jewelry at a time. Jewelry may only be worn or removed according to the rules.

Spork 7: Accelerated Close of Vote

If, during a Proposal's vote, either (a) the Proposal is numerically certain either to pass or to fail, not counting implicit Spork votes, or (b) all eligible voters have voted before the end of the voting time limit, then any player may close the vote and the Proposal will be passed or rejected immediately.

Spork 8: Reward Ordering

Whereas a hierarchy of rewards has been established that has strict ordering,

No person may have a reward of some rank who has not already had the reward of the immediately lesser rank, unless that reward does not have a predecessor.

Spork 9: Award Scarcity

The number of upper level jewelry awards is limited to the following:
Golden Crown - 1
Diamond Scruncy - 5
Emerald Sunglasses - 9
Silver Braces - 13

Once the specified number of jewels have been awarded, further awards of that jewel may only be made if a current holder gives it up (voluntarily or involuntarily).

Spork 10: Rule Precedence

In the event of a conflict between rules, the lower numbered rule take precedence over the higher numbered rule.

Spork 12: Official Documents

An Official Document is a page that may only be edited according to the Spork rules, which are themselves an Official Document.

An Official Document named the Scoresheet shall be created to serve as a public record of certain aspects of the current gamestate. Any player may edit any data on the Scoresheet known to be inaccurate, add any required data that is missing, and make cosmetic changes to the Scoresheet.

The Scoresheet shall initially track the Royal Jewelry held by all players, noting how and when they obtained it.

Spork 13: Anti-Bribery Act

1. All voters voting "Yes" on this proposal before its passage will receive a free upgrade.

2. No subsequent Spork shall confer any benefit or penalty, including promotions or demotions, to any player or players because of a vote cast on it.

3. Sporks shall not target any specific player or class of players with direct benefit or penalty, including promotions.

Spork 14 Spork Chess

The eventual winner of Spork Chess shall enjoy one Jewelry upgrade. The winner is the player who owns the last remaining King.

The Spork Chess Administrator may modify the Spork Chess rules if there are no objections to the proposed change within 48 hours by a player owning a King on the board.

Spork 15 Establishing a Currency

There exists a unit of currency called a Sporko. Sporkos may only be created, transferred or destroyed according to the rules.

The Scoresheet page shall be amended to include a section documenting current player Sporko credits, along with a simple log of all Sporko credits listing the player, the amount, and the reason for the credit/debit.

Spork 16 Sporko Transfer

Sporkos may be transferred between players at any time by mutual consent of the two players involved. Sporkos may be traded for any reason, including the buying of votes.

Spork 17 Sporko Transfer 2

All sporko trades must be done publicly.

Spork 18 Chess Tweaks

Players shall receive 1 Sporko for each Spork Chess piece they capture.

The Administrator may modify Spork Chess for easier play if there are no objections to that change.

Spork 19 Sock Puppetry Ban

Sock puppetry shall henceforth be banned. All players shall limit themselves to a single user ID. All actions of sock puppets, including their designation as players, shall be considered null and void. A sock puppeteer, when and if convicted, shall likewise be stripped of any right to participate in Spork.

Sock puppetry shall be determined by a majority vote of whoever remains active of the first nine players ("The Quorum of Nine") on the grounds of evidence provided by site administrators or others.

Both the alleged sock puppeteer and alleged puppets shall have the right to a defense.

Spork 20 Administrative Rewards

Vote rewards, rule modifications and other updates to Official Documents as the result of a passing proposal are the responsibility of its author.

Spork 21 Book Learnin'

A player may earn one additional Sporko for each rhetorical device used in his proposal. (Qualifying rhetorical devices listed here.)

Spork 22 Voting Options

Proposals must have discernable "Yes" and "No" and "Abstain" options. Additional named options are permitted, to allow sub-clauses of a Proposal to pass or fail.

Proposals may cause game events to happen as well as changes to the ruleset. New rule text should be posted within blockquote tags to distinguish game events from rule changes.

Spork 23 Spend Your Sporkos (SYS)

A proposal may have more than one option for yes and no respectively. Specifically, it may have a "Double Yes" and "Double No."

Voting "double yes" or "double no" costs 5 sporkos. Double yes and Double no count as two votes for or against the proposal, respectively. The required passing margin will be increased accordingly.

"Double yes" and "double no" may be renamed with appropriate synonyms, such as "hell yes" or "good god, no" as long as it is clear that these are the superlative votes.

If superlative options exist, normal yes and no options must also exist.

Spork 25 MeFiNoNo

Henceforth "MetaFilter Nomic," or MeFiNo, shall be designated as a mini-game within Spork, and not the other way around.

MeFiNo will be understood to exist in a hermetically sealed "Pocket Nomic" and events inside MeFiNo will be understood to have no effect on Spork. Rule changes in Spork will likewise have no effect within the Pocket Nomic.

Despite this hermetic seal, if the rules of MeFiNo and Spork are ever deemed to be in conflict the rules of Spork shall be understood to take precedence.

The winner of MeFiNo shall receive a free jewelry upgrade.

Players shall be awarded one Sporko for legally voting on each MeFiNo proposal, and an additional ten Sporkos for each passing MeFiNo proposal they author.

One time, add applicable points retroactively to reflect MeFiNo voting to date.

Spork 26 Foreign Relations

There exists an Official Document called Foreign Relations which holds Spork Nomic's public and official outbound correspondence and contracts with other nomics and outside entities. When Foreign Relations call up a change in Spork Nomic's game state, those changes will be made.

Spork 27 Contracts

Any player may create a Contract, after which it may only be modified as specified by the Contract itself, or by Spork Rule or Judgment, both of which override all terms and memberships of all Contracts.

Any player may Join any Contract that allows that player to join it. A player may not Leave a Contract except as specified by that Contract.

Players are bound by the terms of all Contracts from the time they Join it until they Leave it. During this time they are considered a Party of the Contract.

Joining and Leaving announcements shall be posted to the Contract's comment thread, as well as, by default unless otherwise specified, other correspondence concerning the Contract's state and execution.

Contracts must name a willing player as its Arbitrator, whose Decision may be Requested by any Party to the Contract to clarify its rules and current state. Such Decisions are binding but are subservient to Spork Rules and Judgments.

Contracts with no remaining Parties or invalid posts may be removed by an administrator.

Spork 28 Voting Spork

The voting option designated "Spork" shall be understood as a vote for whichever option currently has the most votes at any given moment. Non-voting players shall be understood to have implicitly voted "Spork."

Implicit votes of "Spork" shall not count for purposes of establishing a quorum of three votes as required by Spork 1.

If "double yes" or "double no" has the most votes, a vote of "Spork" will likewise count twice, but will not cost the "Spork"-voting player any Sporkos.

In the event of a tie, a vote of "Spork" is equivalent to an abstention.

Spork 29 Solidarity

The winner of the minigame known as MeFiNo must also be a player of Spork. No victory of a non-Spork-player in MeFiNo shall be considered legitimate.

Spork 30 Spork Galaxy

Creates the Spork Galaxy minigame.

Spork 31 Spork Global Thermonuclear War

Creates new minigame: Spork Global Thermonuclear War.

Spork Zero (0)

Spork Nomic is a friendly game and an emerging community.

Attempts at a Quick Win are not legal. Attempts at a non-harmful Elegant Win are legal. The distinction between these forms of rapid win are left to the discretion of Judgment participants.

Permissions have been freely granted to allow players to update sections of the site. Any technical hack to the game or abuse of these abilities is a breach of trust and a grave violation of this rule.

Dishonesty and browser trickery are illegal. Etiquette shall be used at all times, though a sense of humor is a prerequisite for accessing this site.

Violations of Spork Zero shall result in Judgment being invoked, and such violation will be regarded by the Administrators of this site as a breach of the Terms of Service until judged otherwise.

Spork Zero takes precedence over the rest of the ruleset. Any claim by another rule to take precedence over this metarule is void.
