Should we open the doors?

mosessis jeblis is having an awfully boring tenure as judge, so here's an official question:

Current players came mostly from MeTa. Is MeFiNo ready for a Metafilter Projects announcement?

Are new players in line behind volkspider?

What is the process for getting on the player list?

Luckily yes/no invocations are not yet required.

Right now the rules don't cover this. I can propose a rule about how to get on the player list and where in line the new players go if there is support for this idea. It would be pretty basic, put your name on the list, make a good faith attempt to keep playing, possibly something about sockpuppets (I need to print out and read the current rule set and recent judgements to see where we're at on this), and add to the end of the turn (i.e. after volkspider) in the order in which you joined. Or possibly slot in alphabetically if that's a better idea.

I think once we have a procedure in place then a projects announcement would be good.

#

What's the difference between "official question" and "invocation"?

And why was our customary language stripped from the player list page?

#

I'm not sure any of these are appropriate questions for the judge: they don't affect completion of the current turn and they don't really have anything to do with the rules as such. A poll, I think, would be better, though I'd sort of prefer that this happen first and then we deal with it, rather than the other way around..

#

Is 313 over Otherwise I believe I'm still judge. Anyone wanna invoke judgment on the definition of a star?

#

Opening registration would be fine as long as we avoid sock puppets.

#

You seem really keen to rule about this, jeblis, feel free to invoke it yourself if it is a burning issue for you! :)

#

I agree that this isn't a judgement issue really. Having a proper rule would be better, because new players joining is an ongoing thing that affects the whole game rather than a single issue that affects one turn. This is what the rules should be adressing.

#

It just doesn't seem to me to be a key issue. jay, why have you decided to bring this up now, are there hordes banging at the gates trying to get in or what?

#

It seems selfish to keep you all to ourselves, Aaron.

#

Yeah, I guess this would have been directed at jeblis. "Are new players allowed?" is a legitimate question which brings up a lot of other related issues.

#

jay, I think the issue with posting to projects is that we will experience the same phenomena we had at game start and have just recovered from - a bunch of people will think "Hey, neat, I want in!", and then 90% of them will never come back after joining and watching for a day or two.

And again, jay, I ask you: why did our original informal policy for joining get taken off the player page?

#

Why are you asking me?

#

You seem afraid of a lower asshat ratio than 10%.

#

Why are you riding me like this, dude? Actually, maybe letting more folks in would lower the bullying prick ratio. :)

#

Please note that for the last number of days I've made every effort to chill, so your ongoing sniping seems a little misplaced.

#

In fact, I had to stop doing dishes to come point out that so many people left in the first couple week because you were wedging the game up and there was nothing to play.

And it wasn't 90% that failed to return, and won't be if there's some minimum barrier to entry.

#

Ah, I see. You're bitter because I drove everyone away, singlehandedly, by force of my asshattery. Whatever, jay.

#

I'll stand back a moment and let your hordes of supporters correct me.

#

My two words for you are not "happy birthday", good sir. I will step away for today to calm down, but if you would prefer I leave please just say so and it will be done. It is your sandbox, after all.

#

Why are you riding me like this, dude?

Grudge? The fact you came spouting misinformation to a question I didn't ask? Trained reaction?

#

It is your sandbox, after all.

I'm just a guy with some hosting, I don't have any special place here. If I did, I wouldn't ask you to leave, because you're very entertaining to some of the players and undeniably add life to the site.

Maybe this is just my play style, stymieing my voting opponents into missing roll call.

#

If I thought of it as my project, I'd just post it where I saw fit. This site is more Aaron's than it is mine.

Poll is probably the way to go, because consensus is needed on a couple issues: is new player registration really open (versus "the 14"), and if so, should other Metafilter members be invited to play?

I had assumed a pretty open game but this is another issue everybody probably had different expectations on.

#

Well, I'd like to see both this and Spork advertised more widely, for what it's worth.

#

I think opening it up might be fun, but I don't think we should do it just yet. If this is the kind of game that's going to end up going on for a while, then I think we should post it to Projects and open it up (with rules to make it somewhat orderly). However right now the game still seems to be somewhat in a state of flux and I like the players we have and I'd like to see us go through at least a full round, maybe two, figuring out what this game is about, before we open it up.

#

I filed at the wrong courthouse earlier, so I put a "judge on call" in the sidebar.

#

Objection. Does not affect completion of the current turn.

Shelleycat's right. This is for the rules, not for judgment (except in emergency, like the great sockpuppet invasion of 309). That said, I think it's a rule that needs making sooner rather than later.

I think the ass to hat ratio is just right.

#

Objection. Does not affect completion of the current turn.

An influx of new voters would affect completion of the current turn.

Right, and so would a sudden alien invasion. Hypotheticals, however, don't...

#

But inviting new users in takes it from hypothesis to reality. Not inviting them doesn't affect current turn, inviting them would.

#

Jay, please don't be such a prick to A-Aar. Especially while trying to illegally ram through this transparent court-packing baloney.

#

Baiter baiter punkin hater.

#

I knew my people would show up eventually.

#

The MeFiNo Shit List has been dissolved, since democratic protections are now in place.

#

I've decided that I like the idea of posting a rule about this and that some new blood (assuming it wants to keep playing and isn't a sockpuppet) would be great. I'm going to catch up on everything first though, try to make sure I know what I'm talking about.

#

You know, I think I disagree with Aaron about pretty much everything here. But I don't think it's his fault that people leave. This game is a bit overwhelming and often annoying for all kinds of reasons, a certain level of attrition was always going to happen. So I don't think that jay's comments here are fair.

That "here" was referring to mefi nomic by the way. I don't know Meatbomb elsewhere and have no idea if we agree on things in general or not.
