Blog Of The Week: Twitter

Time for your weekend Blog Of The Week - Twitter! We certainly wish we hadnt started adding these to the index in 2007, now theres over 820,000 of them and rising! The site is principled on the question: "What are you doing?", with a post limit of 140 characters. People post about a variety of topics, see a search for 'blogshares', for example. Users post their activities frequently, and have thousands of both followers and other users they themselves follow. Of course, their own blog holds the top spot on the Top 100 List, along with twitter blogs for Barack Obama and Wil Wheaton, not to mention tech pundits Kevin Rose, Jason Calacanis, Robert Scoble, Justine Ezarik and more. How can you not want to get involved???

Now, sitting at No. 8 on the Top 100, the index entry for our recently elected President shows nothing but growth - added in June 2007 (the month before my stroke, would you believe), at this rate it'll steal the top spot from the Twitter Blog, with (at this time) over 530,000 users following his activities on the site. Keep an eye on this one, folks.

Blog Of The Week: Talking Points Memo

A popular liberal web-based political blog, Talking Points Memo was founded by Josh Marshall in the midst of the 2000 Florida Recount, and has grown ever since. The blog covers several topics, in earlier years covering the Iraq war, later moving onto newer topics like the proposed privatization of Social Security. The site joined the Blogshares Index in January 2005, with a valuation that has been... varied, to say the least, at one point nearing B$200m but lately back down at B$2.5m. The blog is still in good shape and actively traded. You can find out more about the site on Wikipedia.

Blog Of The Week: PostSecret

(Graphs are correct at time of article publication)

Post your secrets anonymously, and have them appear online. First listed in April 2006, PostSecret quickly gained value, peaking at over B$100,000,000 before being hit by the Potent Wind decline that pushed the valuation down to its current level of B$8.3m, however the blog continues to grow in strength each month, soon to pass 10,000 incoming links. The blog has a strong position in the Top 100 and the owner Frank Warren still continues to post fresh secrets every Sunday. Begun as a community mail art project, the site quickly gained a huge following, now with over 60,000 people registered on the chat forum. Frank himself regularly comments and appears to speak at venues across the US.

In other news, yesterday the Blogshares server went down (again), suffering it's first hard disk failure since 2003. We're temporarily on lowered strength until the disk(s) can be replaced and the RAID array rebuilt, hopefully (!) in the next few days. Also, it seems that for a while users have been experiencing problems using PayPal to purchase Premium Membership. We'll be looking into this, but if you have any information that could be of use, drop us an email.
